OB-XD Free Virtual Analog Synthesizer

A Detailed Look at the Free Oberheim-Inspired Synthesizer

The discoDSP OB-Xd is a virtual analog synthesizer designed to emulate the architecture and sonic characteristics of the classic 1979 Oberheim OB-X hardware. Rather than being a strict point-by-point recreation, it expands upon the original’s design limitations while preserving its voice structure, filter behaviors, and envelope characteristics.

Architecture and Oscillator Section

OB-Xd utilizes a vectorized engine that significantly optimizes CPU consumption compared to older versions of the plugin. The core sound generation relies on high-quality oscillators designed to minimize digital aliasing in the upper registers.

  • Pulse Width Modification: It features three independent pulse-width modulation paths, including a PW offset on Oscillator 2, modulation driven by the filter envelope, and a dual-oscillator PW movement mode.
  • Analog Mode: The plugin incorporates an adjustable component tolerance system. This introduces subtle, per-voice frequency drifts and filter discrepancies to mirror the instability of vintage hardware components.

Filter and Envelopes

The filter section emulates the classic multi-mode characteristics associated with early Oberheim units.

  • Continuous Blending: It allows for seamless transitions between different filter types rather than stepped switching.
  • Self-Oscillation: The filter resonance is capable of self-oscillation, allowing it to act as an additional sine-wave tone generator.
  • Log-Lin Envelope Sliders: The Attack curve replicates the classic RC capacitor discharge. Users can adjust this parameter continuously via a log-linear slider, shifting the response from a snappy logarithmic curve (suited for percussive plucks) to a linear response (for gradual swells).

Polyphonic Unison and Modulation

OB-Xd separates note polyphony from voice stacking, meaning you can layer up to 16 detuned voices per note without immediately exhausting the chord polyphony pool. Increasing the stereo spread parameter past 50% pans the stacked voices across the stereo field.

  • Dual LFOs: It features two fully independent, parallel LFOs. Each contains its own rate control, three waveforms, two amount sliders, five target destinations, and host tempo synchronization.
  • Modern Control Integration: The plugin provides native MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) support, mapping per-note pitch bend, timbre, and pressure to multiple routing destinations. It also features bi-directional MIDI CC communication to stay synchronized with external hardware surfaces.

Free vs. Commercial Licensing Terms

The non-commercial version of OB-Xd is available as a free download. Functionally, it contains the full DSP engine, but comes with specific technical and legal limitations:

  • Usage Restrictions: The free version is strictly prohibited from being used in any direct or indirect commercial, for-profit enterprise.
  • Technical Limitations: Oversampling (2x and 4x) is disabled in the free version. Additionally, audio output is restricted during offline rendering when utilizing the AAX and LV2 formats.
  • Format Support: It runs as a 64-bit application supporting VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and LV2 formats across Windows, macOS (Intel/Apple Silicon), and Linux.
