DelayU-42 Free Vintage Digital Delay

Finding a characterful delay plugin that doesn’t clutter a dense mix can be challenging
The DelayU-42 by MKS Mixing is a free vintage-style digital delay VST designed to emulate the grit, saturation, and unique workflow of classic 1980s rack-mount units—specifically inspired by the legendary Lexicon PCM 42.
Instead of offering a transparent, pristine digital echo, DelayU-42 is built to add analog warmth and musical imperfection to your tracks.
Key Features
- Cascaded Filtering System: One of the most notable features of the DelayU-42 is its modeled cascaded filtering. With each successive repeat, the delay tail becomes progressively darker. This natural high-frequency roll-off prevents the echoes from clashing with the dry signal, making it an exceptional tool for lead vocals and bright lead instruments that need depth without frequency masking.
- Dual Opto-Limiter in the Feedback Path: To prevent harsh digital clipping, MKS Mixing incorporated a modeled dual opto-limiter directly into the feedback loop. This feature smooths out transient spikes and allows users to push the feedback into aggressive self-oscillation while maintaining a musical, controlled analog character.
- Input-Driven Saturation: The plugin features an active Input control that drives the signal into the delay circuit. Pushing the input introduces harmonic distortion and vintage grit, allowing the plugin to double as a character box.
- Flexible Timing Modes: DelayU-42 offers a raw millisecond mode (DLY) capable of extremely long delays up to 4800 ms, as well as a tempo-synced mode (CLK) that locks seamlessly to your DAW’s project tempo.
- Standalone Saturation Box: Because the saturation and limiter characteristics are tied to the Input and Mix controls, producers can set the delay time and feedback to zero (0 ms). In this state, the DelayU-42 functions purely as an analog-style saturation and color unit for processing drums, bass, or mix buses.
The DelayU-42 is an essential free VST plugin for producers looking to add authentic 1980s digital delay character to their mixing arsenal
