Moloko Instruments has introduced luch, a free AU/VST3 instrument for macOS and Windows that steps away from modern, pristine sounds
Instead of aiming for perfection, luch embraces the uneven, fragile, and unpolished character of a Soviet-era children’s metallophone.
Recorded meticulously through vintage Oktava microphones (an MK-13M condenser and an ML-16 ribbon) and period-accurate hardware, the instrument feels less like a sterile digital reconstruction and more like a piece of history carried forward through time.
Sound Engine and Layering
At its core, the interface is built around blending different acoustic and synthetic elements:
- The Acoustic Layer: Features “mute” and “ring” articulation settings. You can keep the sound clean, age it with the distinct, lo-fi tone of a vintage wire recorder, or switch to recorded free-rhythm takes for a more organic feel.
- Synth Textures: The acoustic layer can be blended with textures sourced from two distinctive Soviet synthesizers, adding a slow, unstable, and dreamy atmosphere to the metallic attacks.
- Dynamic Blending: A central ray-shaped slider controls the balance between the acoustic source and the synth textures. Two tempo-synced LFOs are available to continuously modulate this blend over time, creating evolving soundscapes.
Tone Shaping and Details
luch is designed to give you control over the physical imperfections of the sound:
- Microphone Selection: Switch between the MK-13M condenser (for a closer, clearer transient) and the ML-16 ribbon (for a softer body that captures more room tone). It supports both mid-side width and centered mono.
- Physical Details: Dedicated controls for Touch and Noise allow you to dial in extra physical characteristics, while Grit and Space shape the saturation and spatial depth.
- Technical Specs: The engine is surprisingly deep for a free plugin, featuring 4,815 samples covering 15 notes, with 5 round-robins and 6 velocity layers to ensure natural variation.
