Glass Beaker Special Free Synthesizer

Turning Glass into Music

Glass Beaker is the latest addition to The Crow Hill Company’s acclaimed Vaults series. True to the philosophy of Christian Henson (founder of the company and Spitfire Audio), this instrument stems from the premise that music doesn’t necessarily require formal training or expensive instruments, but rather direct experimentation with sound and a curiosity about everyday objects.

A Sound Between the Familiar and the Inexplicable

The concept behind Glass Beaker is as simple as it is effective: a microphone was placed in front of a large glass beaker, and its sonic possibilities were explored through touch, movement, and tapping with a hammer. The result is a tone that the developer describes as somewhere between a glockenspiel and a celesta, yet with its own distinct identity that defies easy categorization.

This instrument offers an organic, fragile, and crystalline texture that can function perfectly as a melodic keyboard sound or, with the right processing, as an atmospheric and evocative pad. Its character is inherently cinematic, ideal for adding a layer of “magic” or mystery to any composition.

Total Control and Sound Design

Like other instruments in the Vaults series, Glass Beaker uses an intuitive interface that allows you to radically transform the original audio source through several key controls:

  • Chorus and Expression: The two large dials allow you to add depth, stereo width, and a “watery” character, as well as control the dynamics and timbre of the crystals.
  • Crystalliser: This is one of the most interesting effects in this release. It’s a granular synthesis processor that can generate anything from a subtle ambient backdrop to ethereal and shimmering textures.
  • Spatial Effects: The plugin includes a high-quality convolution reverb and an immersive stereo delay to place the sound in deep acoustic spaces.
  • LPF Filter: A low-pass filter that allows you to cut high frequencies for a more distant, dark, and “ghostly” tone.

World-Class Recording

Despite being an everyday object, the recording was not improvised. Glass Beaker was recorded by Christian Henson himself at Gorbals Sound Studios in Glasgow, using Neve consoles and high-end equipment to ensure that every nuance of the glass’s resonance was captured with the utmost fidelity.

Glass Beaker is a testament to the beauty that can be found in simplicity. It’s a tool designed to inspire and encourage producers to move away from pre-established methods. As a free instrument, it’s a must-download for those seeking authentic sounds, experimental textures, and a touch of organic originality in their productions.

Glass Beaker works within the free “Vaults” plugin by The Crow Hill Company, available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
